What Are the Attributes of God?

When we study the attributes of God, we are not merely engaging in theology—we are deepening our relationship with the Creator Himself. Understanding God’s nature helps us recognize His hand in our lives and trust Him more fully. The Lord Jesus said,

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

The more we know God, the more we are able to worship Him in truth and walk with Him faithfully.

Failing to recognize who God truly is leaves us spiritually disoriented. In seasons of suffering, trials, or confusion, a distorted view of God can lead to anxiety and doubt. But anchoring our hearts in the unchanging truth of His character transforms how we see life. Trusting in His nature—His power, love, justice, mercy, faithfulness, and sovereignty—gives us peace, confidence, and direction.

The more we understand the attributes of God, the more we grow in faith, humility, and obedience. What follows is a thorough, properly formatted study of God’s attributes to help you reflect deeply, teach clearly, and worship joyfully.

1. God Is Eternal

God has no beginning and no end. He exists outside time and was never created. Scripture declares,

“Before the mountains were brought forth… from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” (Psalm 90:2)

He is described as never growing tired or weak, for

“The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.” (Isaiah 40:28)

And He identifies Himself as the One who transcends all ages:

“I am the Alpha and the Omega… who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

There has never been a moment when God did not exist, and there will never be a moment when He ceases to exist. He is eternal by nature.

2. God Is Omnipotent (All-Powerful)

God possesses unlimited power. He can accomplish anything that aligns with His holy nature and divine will. Jeremiah prayed,

“There is nothing too hard for You.” (Jeremiah 32:17)

God asked Abraham,

“Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14)

And Job confessed,

“I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.” (Job 42:2)

No force in creation can limit or hinder the power of God. His purposes always prevail.

3. God Is Omniscient (All-Knowing)

God knows everything perfectly and fully. He never learns anything, forgets anything, or misunderstands anything. The Scriptures affirm,

“His understanding is infinite.” (Psalm 147:5)

Nothing is hidden from His sight, for

“There is no creature hidden from His sight…” (Hebrews 4:13)

And John declares,

“God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.” (1 John 3:20)

God sees past, present, future, actions, motives, and thoughts. His knowledge is perfect and absolute.

4. God Is Omnipresent (Everywhere Present)

God is present everywhere at all times. David asked,

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?” (Psalm 139:7–10)

God Himself declared,

“Do I not fill heaven and earth?” (Jeremiah 23:24)

And Proverbs says,

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3)

There is no place where God is absent. He is never far from any one of us.

5. God Is Holy

God’s holiness sets Him apart from all creation. He is pure, perfect, and infinitely higher than anything or anyone. The seraphim proclaim,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” (Isaiah 6:3)

Believers are commanded,

“Be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15–16)

And in heaven they worship saying,

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8)

God’s holiness defines all His attributes—His justice, His love, His power, and His compassion.

6. God Is Love

God does not merely show love—He is love. His love is unconditional, sacrificial, and eternal. Scripture declares, “God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Paul writes,

“God demonstrates His own love toward us… while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

And Jesus says,

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” (John 3:16)

God’s love seeks what is best for us, even at great cost to Himself.

7. God Is Just

God always does what is right. His judgments are perfect because they come from His holy nature. Moses proclaimed,

“A God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.” (Deuteronomy 32:4)

Scripture affirms,

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne.” (Psalm 89:14)

And Paul writes,

“God ‘will render to each one according to his deeds.’” (Romans 2:6)

God’s justice guarantees that evil will be judged and righteousness will be upheld.

8. God Is Merciful

God’s mercy means He does not treat us as our sins deserve. Psalm 103 declares,

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.” (Psalm 103:8)

Jeremiah writes,

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed…” (Lamentations 3:22–23)

And Paul reminds the church,

“Not by works of righteousness… but according to His mercy He saved us.” (Titus 3:5)

God’s mercy brings forgiveness, patience, and compassion to those who return to Him.

9. God Is Gracious

Grace is God’s unearned favor. It is not something He gives, it is Who He is. Salvation itself is a gift, as Scripture declares,

“For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)

Jesus told Paul,

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

And Paul writes,

“Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:24)

Grace gives us what we do not deserve—salvation, strength, blessing, and eternal life.

10. God Is Immutable (Unchanging)

God never changes. His nature, character, promises, and purposes remain forever the same. God said,

“For I am the Lord, I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6)

James writes,

“…with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:17)

And the writer of Hebrews declares,

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

Because God does not change, we can place our full trust in Him.

11. God Is Faithful

God is completely trustworthy. He keeps His promises and never fails His people. Paul writes,

“God is faithful, by whom you were called…” (1 Corinthians 1:9)

He assures the church,

“The Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you…” (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

And Jeremiah declares,

“Great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:23)

God’s faithfulness gives us security in every season of life.

12. God Is Sovereign

God rules over all creation with absolute authority. Everything happens under His control and by His permission. The psalmist writes,

“The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19)

The Book of Proverbs says,

“There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21)

And Daniel declares,

“He does according to His will… no one can restrain His hand.” (Daniel 4:35)

Nothing is outside God’s rule. He is in control of all things.

13. God Is Truth

Truth is not an idea—it is a Person. Jesus said,

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)

Scripture affirms,

“God, who cannot lie…” (Titus 1:2)

And the psalmist declares,

“The entirety of Your word is truth…” (Psalm 119:160)

God is the standard of truth. His Word is absolutely reliable.

14. God Is Wise

God’s wisdom is perfect, infinite, and always produces what is good. Paul writes,

“To God, alone wise, be glory…” (Romans 16:27)

The Book of Proverbs says,

“The Lord by wisdom founded the earth…” (Proverbs 3:19)

And James encourages believers,

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…” (James 1:5)

God always knows the best way and the right time to accomplish His will.

15. God Is Good

God is the source and standard of everything morally pure and right. David writes,

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good…” (Psalm 34:8)

Nahum declares,

“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble…” (Nahum 1:7)

And Jesus said,

“No one is good but One, that is, God.” (Mark 10:18)

Because God is good and merciful, we experience blessings we do not deserve. His goodness flows out of His loving and merciful nature.
