Having said that, we will better understand the meaning of this if we look at it from the perspective of a person who is an expert in the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"1186\">But before we dive into its actual meaning, let us take note \u2014 and put it deep in our hearts \u2014 the <strong data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"952\">importance<\/strong> of being born again:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"1186\"><strong data-start=\"976\" data-end=\"1043\"><em data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"1041\">&#8220;Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (John 3:3)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"1186\">And in verse 5, the Lord Jesus added,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"1186\"><strong data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1184\"><em data-start=\"1099\" data-end=\"1182\">&#8220;Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1188\" data-end=\"1281\">See? We <strong data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1210\">cannot see<\/strong> and we <strong data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1234\">cannot enter<\/strong> the Kingdom of God if we are not born again!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9233c2 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"f9233c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-26ba562 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"26ba562\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1344\">1. Being Born Again Means Being Spiritually Reborn<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1346\" data-end=\"1418\">Some people call it <strong data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1392\">spiritual regeneration<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1417\">spiritual rebirth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1702\">Notice this: <strong data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1461\">Nicodemus had just asked<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1702\"><strong data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1510\"><em data-start=\"1467\" data-end=\"1508\">&#8220;How can a man be born when he is old?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (John 3:4)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1702\">This shows that he misunderstood Jesus&#8217; spiritual meaning. He first thought that Jesus was speaking about a physical birth \u2014 but Jesus was speaking about a <strong data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1701\">spiritual birth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1761\">When man fell into sin, he became <strong data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"1758\">spiritually dead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"2019\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"1860\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1764\" data-end=\"1860\"><strong data-start=\"1764\" data-end=\"1781\">Ephesians 2:1<\/strong> says,<br data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1790\" \/><strong data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1860\"><em data-start=\"1794\" data-end=\"1858\">&#8220;And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"2019\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"2019\"><strong data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"1878\">Romans 5:12<\/strong> also states,<br data-start=\"1891\" data-end=\"1894\" \/><strong data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"2019\"><em data-start=\"1898\" data-end=\"2017\">&#8220;Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2021\" data-end=\"2312\">And so, the Lord Jesus is teaching that unless we are spiritually <strong data-start=\"2087\" data-end=\"2097\">reborn<\/strong>, there is <strong data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2118\">no way<\/strong> we can see the kingdom of God.<br data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2152\" \/>This is further confirmed by <strong data-start=\"2181\" data-end=\"2193\">John 3:6<\/strong>, where Jesus says,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2021\" data-end=\"2312\"><strong data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2312\"><em data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2310\">&#8220;That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f689845 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"f689845\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41b0232 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"41b0232\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2349\">2. How to Be Born Again?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2351\" data-end=\"2700\">It is saddening \u2014 truly heartbreaking \u2014 to realize that <strong data-start=\"2407\" data-end=\"2448\">some people today have misrepresented<\/strong> this beautiful truth.<br data-start=\"2470\" data-end=\"2473\" \/>Some teach that to be born again simply means <strong data-start=\"2519\" data-end=\"2542\">joining their group<\/strong>, becoming a member of their &#8220;born-again&#8221; congregation. While not wanting to sound harsh, this is truly a <strong data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2677\">tragic misunderstanding<\/strong> of the Lord\u2019s words.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2351\" data-end=\"2700\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2702\" data-end=\"2788\">Take note that the Lord uses the word <strong data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"2749\">&#8220;one&#8221;<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2702\" data-end=\"2788\"><strong data-start=\"2753\" data-end=\"2786\"><em data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2784\">&#8220;Unless one is born again.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2790\" data-end=\"3009\">This tells us clearly that <strong data-start=\"2817\" data-end=\"2864\">being born again is a deeply personal thing<\/strong>. It is a <strong data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"2899\">personal experience<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"2903\" data-end=\"2933\">personal spiritual rebirth<\/strong> that each individual must undergo if they want to enter the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2790\" data-end=\"3009\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3046\">So, how can a person be born again?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3048\" data-end=\"3205\">When Nicodemus seemed confused, Jesus further explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3048\" data-end=\"3205\"><strong data-start=\"3107\" data-end=\"3194\"><em data-start=\"3109\" data-end=\"3192\">&#8220;Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (John 3:5)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3207\" data-end=\"3280\">Now, we are given two elements: <strong data-start=\"3239\" data-end=\"3256\">born of water<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3261\" data-end=\"3279\">born of Spirit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3282\" data-end=\"3347\">Let us now take a closer look at what the Bible says about these.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52bf4a5 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"52bf4a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c8adf1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3c8adf1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 data-start=\"3354\" data-end=\"3390\">3. Born of Water and of Spirit<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3419\" data-end=\"3616\">In the New Testament, we encounter <strong data-start=\"3454\" data-end=\"3493\">a deeper and more spiritual meaning<\/strong> when we hear of &#8220;water&#8221; and &#8220;spirit&#8221; together.<br data-start=\"3540\" data-end=\"3543\" \/>Understanding these will lead us to the real meaning of being born again.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3623\" data-end=\"3647\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h4 data-start=\"3623\" data-end=\"3647\">a. Born of Water<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3802\">To be &#8220;born of water&#8221; signifies the <strong data-start=\"3685\" data-end=\"3704\">inner cleansing<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3709\" data-end=\"3723\">repentance<\/strong> associated with the act of <strong data-start=\"3751\" data-end=\"3768\">water baptism<\/strong> that John the Baptist introduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3804\" data-end=\"3935\"><strong data-start=\"3804\" data-end=\"3816\">Mark 1:4<\/strong> says,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3804\" data-end=\"3935\"><strong data-start=\"3825\" data-end=\"3935\"><em data-start=\"3827\" data-end=\"3933\">&#8220;John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3937\" data-end=\"4320\">Nicodemus, as a teacher of the law, was surely familiar with the prophecy in <strong data-start=\"4014\" data-end=\"4034\">Ezekiel 36:25-26<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3937\" data-end=\"4320\"><strong data-start=\"4038\" data-end=\"4320\"><em data-start=\"4040\" data-end=\"4318\">&#8220;Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4322\" data-end=\"4494\">However, it is important to understand that <strong data-start=\"4366\" data-end=\"4431\">it is not the act of being baptized in water that cleanses us<\/strong>, but the <strong data-start=\"4443\" data-end=\"4491\">transformation that happens inside the heart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4496\" data-end=\"4853\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4496\" data-end=\"4737\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4498\" data-end=\"4737\"><strong data-start=\"4498\" data-end=\"4514\">1 Peter 3:21<\/strong> explains this clearly:<br data-start=\"4537\" data-end=\"4540\" \/><strong data-start=\"4542\" data-end=\"4737\"><em data-start=\"4544\" data-end=\"4735\">&#8220;There is also an antitype which now saves us\u2014baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4738\" data-end=\"4853\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4740\" data-end=\"4853\"><strong data-start=\"4740\" data-end=\"4755\">Psalm 51:10<\/strong> cries out:<br data-start=\"4766\" data-end=\"4769\" \/><strong data-start=\"4771\" data-end=\"4853\"><em data-start=\"4773\" data-end=\"4851\">&#8220;Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4855\" data-end=\"4962\">True repentance is a matter of the heart \u2014 a firm decision to return to God from a life of rejecting Him. (See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/answeringtoday.com\/what-is-true-repentance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"4975\" data-end=\"5005\">&#8220;What is True Repentance?&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>) Repentance is putting <strong data-start=\"5032\" data-end=\"5048\">faith in God<\/strong>, just like <strong data-start=\"5060\" data-end=\"5071\">Abraham<\/strong> and the Old Testament saints did, about whom it was said,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4855\" data-end=\"4962\"><strong data-start=\"5132\" data-end=\"5208\"><em data-start=\"5134\" data-end=\"5206\">&#8220;Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (Genesis 15:6)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5225\" data-end=\"5392\">Thus, <strong data-start=\"5231\" data-end=\"5296\">to be born of water is to make a decision to come back to God<\/strong> \u2014 not merely performing an outward act, but experiencing a deep inner cleansing of the heart. (See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/answeringtoday.com\/why-do-i-need-to-be-baptized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&#8220;Why do I Need to be Baptized?&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5225\" data-end=\"5392\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"5399\" data-end=\"5424\">b. Born of Spirit<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5426\" data-end=\"5476\">The second part is to be <strong data-start=\"5451\" data-end=\"5473\">born of the Spirit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5478\" data-end=\"5587\">John the Baptist pointed to the Lord Jesus as the One Who<strong data-start=\"5543\" data-end=\"5584\">\u00a0would baptize with the Holy Spirit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5588\" data-end=\"5825\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5588\" data-end=\"5730\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5590\" data-end=\"5730\"><strong data-start=\"5590\" data-end=\"5603\">John 1:33<\/strong> says,<br data-start=\"5609\" data-end=\"5612\" \/><strong data-start=\"5614\" data-end=\"5730\"><em data-start=\"5616\" data-end=\"5728\">&#8220;Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5731\" data-end=\"5825\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5733\" data-end=\"5825\"><strong data-start=\"5733\" data-end=\"5749\">Matthew 3:11<\/strong> echoes this,<br data-start=\"5762\" data-end=\"5765\" \/><strong data-start=\"5767\" data-end=\"5825\"><em data-start=\"5769\" data-end=\"5823\">&#8220;He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5948\" data-end=\"6123\">To be <strong data-start=\"5954\" data-end=\"5980\">baptized in the Spirit<\/strong> is to come to know Jesus personally, to surrender one\u2019s life fully to Him and to have a personal relationship to Him. John the Baptist came first as a <strong data-start=\"7047\" data-end=\"7057\">herald<\/strong>, preparing the way of the Lord. The Lord Jesus, who is our Savior, is the One who <strong data-start=\"7142\" data-end=\"7171\">baptizes us in the Spirit<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"7176\" data-end=\"7197\">forgives our sins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7202\" data-end=\"7243\">But there is an important prerequisite:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"7244\" data-end=\"7485\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7246\" data-end=\"7485\"><strong data-start=\"7246\" data-end=\"7297\">One must first make a decision to return to God<\/strong> \u2014 just as John the Baptist prepared the way for the Messiah,<br data-start=\"7358\" data-end=\"7361\" \/>the only way for us to prepare ourselves to be born of the Spirit is to first be <strong data-start=\"7442\" data-end=\"7459\">born of water<\/strong> \u2014 that is, <strong data-start=\"7470\" data-end=\"7484\">repentance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7487\" data-end=\"7590\"><strong data-start=\"7487\" data-end=\"7512\">What a great mystery!<\/strong><br data-start=\"7512\" data-end=\"7515\" \/>The glorious gift of salvation is opened to those who humbly return to God.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9fc621 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"f9fc621\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-687c3a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"687c3a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 data-start=\"7597\" data-end=\"7613\">Invitation<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7615\" data-end=\"7785\">If you desire to be <strong data-start=\"7635\" data-end=\"7649\">born again<\/strong> today, make the decision now \u2014 to turn away from a life of rejecting God and to surrender your life to the Lord Jesus Christ.
