One Essence, Three Persons<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2823\">The early church summarized this mystery in this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2823\"><strong data-start=\"2696\" data-end=\"2742\">God is one in essence but three in Person.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2823\">Each Person is fully God, not a part of God. Each is distinct but not divided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2825\" data-end=\"2836\">To clarify:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2990\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2869\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2839\" data-end=\"2869\">The <strong data-start=\"2843\" data-end=\"2853\">Father<\/strong> is not the Son.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2870\" data-end=\"2907\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2872\" data-end=\"2907\">The <strong data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"2883\">Son<\/strong> is not the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2908\" data-end=\"2990\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2910\" data-end=\"2990\">The <strong data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"2929\">Holy Spirit<\/strong> is not the Father. Yet, all three are fully and equally God.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52bf4a5 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"52bf4a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a345f19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a345f19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 data-start=\"2997\" data-end=\"3038\">4. Avoiding the Error of Modalism<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3040\" data-end=\"3269\">One common heresy is <strong data-start=\"3061\" data-end=\"3073\">Modalism<\/strong>\u2014the idea that God is one Person who appears in three different forms or modes, like an actor wearing different masks. This view denies the simultaneous and eternal existence of the three Persons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3271\" data-end=\"3307\">The Bible strongly contradicts this:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"3484\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"3484\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3310\" data-end=\"3484\"><em data-start=\"3310\" data-end=\"3329\">At Jesus\u2019 baptism<\/em> (Matthew 3:16\u201317): The Father speaks from heaven, the Spirit descends like a dove, and Jesus is baptized\u2014all three Persons are present and active at once.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9fc621 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"f9fc621\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-687c3a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"687c3a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 data-start=\"3491\" data-end=\"3533\">5. Human Analogies: One Yet Plural<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3535\" data-end=\"3590\">No analogy is perfect, but some help our understanding:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3872\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3749\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3593\" data-end=\"3749\"><strong data-start=\"3593\" data-end=\"3610\">Water analogy<\/strong>: Water can exist as ice, liquid, and steam\u2014but this leans dangerously toward modalism because it cannot exist in all forms simultaneously.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3750\" data-end=\"3872\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3752\" data-end=\"3872\"><strong data-start=\"3752\" data-end=\"3772\">Body-soul-spirit<\/strong>: A human being is one person but with three components\u2014yet still not quite the same as the Trinity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3874\" data-end=\"4214\"><strong data-start=\"3874\" data-end=\"3927\">My best analogy may be the one given in marriage<\/strong>: <em data-start=\"3929\" data-end=\"3963\">\u201cThe two shall become one flesh\u201d<\/em> (Genesis 2:24).<br data-start=\"3979\" data-end=\"3982\" \/>This union illustrates how two distinct persons (husband and wife) are declared <em data-start=\"4062\" data-end=\"4067\">one<\/em> in the eyes of God\u2014still distinct, but united in essence and purpose. This is a glimpse, albeit imperfect, of the relational unity in the Trinity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-416a695 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"416a695\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e906e9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e906e9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 data-start=\"262\" data-end=\"306\">6. Historical Development and Creeds<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"308\" data-end=\"688\">The doctrine of the Trinity was not invented by the early Church\u2014it was <strong data-start=\"380\" data-end=\"394\">recognized<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"396\" data-end=\"409\">clarified<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"415\" data-end=\"427\">defended<\/strong> in response to growing heresies and misunderstandings about the nature of God. While the early Christians worshiped the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as God, the Church gradually formalized the doctrine through theological debates, councils, and creeds.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"755\">\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h5 data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"755\">Tertullian (c. 155\u2013220 AD) \u2013 First Use of \u201cTrinity\u201d<\/h5>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"1145\">The North African theologian <strong data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"800\">Tertullian<\/strong> was the first to use the Latin word <em data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"847\">Trinitas<\/em> to describe the Christian understanding of God. In his writings, he articulated that the Godhead is \u201cone substance and three persons\u201d (<em data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1014\">una substantia, tres personae<\/em>).
