It is about recognizing that we have been living independently from God\u2014ignoring Him, rejecting His rule, and trusting in ourselves or in lesser things. Repentance is the decision to stop going our own way and to return to the Lord.<\/p>\n

The Root of Sin: Ignoring God<\/h4>\n

Sin is not merely the breaking of moral rules\u2014it is the result of turning away from God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In Psalm 14:2<\/em>, God is portrayed as looking down from heaven to see if anyone is seeking Him. The verdict? \u201cThey have all turned aside.\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s the essence of sin\u2014living a life that does not seek God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When Jesus began His public ministry, His message was simple:<\/p>\n

\u201cRepent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Matthew 4:17<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This was not a moralistic command to stop sinning. If anything, the people He was addressing were outwardly religious\u2014fasting, tithing, praying in public. But their hearts were far from God. So Jesus\u2019 call to repentance was a call to return to God<\/strong>\u2014to stop going through the motions and to truly acknowledge the Lord as King.<\/p>\n

He echoed the same in Luke 13:3 and 13:5:<\/p>\n

If we could produce righteousness by our own efforts, there would be no need for the cross. Jesus did not die just to make bad people good\u2014He died to bring dead people to life. The Pharisees: Righteous by Behavior, But Far from God<\/h4>\n
