It was addressed not to a religious leader, nor to one of His disciples, but to a dying criminal\u2014a man condemned by earthly justice, yet rescued by divine mercy.<\/p><h5 data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"846\"><strong>What Was Happening with the Two Criminals?<\/strong><\/h5><p class=\"\" data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"1242\">Jesus was crucified between two thieves, both of whom were receiving the due punishment for their crimes. Early in the crucifixion, both men were mocking Jesus along with the crowd. Matthew records, <em data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1132\">\u201cEven the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.\u201d<\/em> (Matthew 27:44)<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"1242\">Mark confirms this: <em data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1227\">\u201cThose who were crucified with Him reviled Him.\u201d<\/em> (Mark 15:32)<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1679\">But something changed. As the hours passed and suffering intensified, one of the criminals had a radical transformation of heart. The Gospel of Luke captures this turning point:<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1679\"><em data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1661\">\u201cThen one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, \u2018If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.\u2019 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, \u2018Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?\u2019\u201d<\/em> (Luke 23:39\u201340)<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1889\">This criminal recognized the justice of his punishment and the innocence of Jesus:<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1889\"><em data-start=\"1768\" data-end=\"1874\">\u201cAnd we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.\u201d<\/em> (Luke 23:41)<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1891\" data-end=\"2063\">Then, in one of the most profound expressions of faith ever recorded, he turned to Jesus and said, <em data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"2048\">\u201cLord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.\u201d<\/em> (Luke 23:42)<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2065\" data-end=\"2176\">In response, Jesus said, <em data-start=\"2094\" data-end=\"2161\">\u201cAssuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.\u201d<\/em> (Luke 23:43)<\/p><h5 data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2222\"><strong>What Changed in the Repentant Criminal?<\/strong><\/h5><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2224\" data-end=\"2343\">Although Scripture does not spell out every detail, several factors may have influenced the change in this man\u2019s heart:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2345\" data-end=\"2855\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2345\" data-end=\"2538\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2347\" data-end=\"2538\"><strong data-start=\"2347\" data-end=\"2373\">The way Jesus suffered<\/strong>: Without bitterness, without curses, Jesus endured the cross with grace and dignity. His prayer\u2014<em data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2496\">\u201cFather, forgive them\u201d<\/em>\u2014may have pierced this criminal&#8217;s heart.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2539\" data-end=\"2682\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2541\" data-end=\"2682\"><strong data-start=\"2541\" data-end=\"2578\">The inscription above Jesus\u2019 head<\/strong>: \u201cTHIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS\u201d (Luke 23:38) may have triggered a revelation about who Jesus truly was.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"2683\" data-end=\"2855\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2685\" data-end=\"2855\"><strong data-start=\"2685\" data-end=\"2719\">The working of the Holy Spirit<\/strong>: Ultimately, salvation is the work of God.
