Do I Need God?

QUESTION:

DO I NEED GOD?

ANSWER:

With all certainty, we need God because He is our Creator, our Sustainer, our Source of Life, our Purpose, and our only Savior—without Him, we have nothing and are nothing.

Before we dive into the heart of our discussion, let us revisit what we shared in our article “Is There a God?”. In that article, we firmly established that there is not even an iota of doubt regarding the existence of God. Creation itself, our very conscience, and divine revelation testify beyond any reasonable question that God indeed exists.

However, here lies the reality: not everyone acknowledges God’s existence. Even among those who recognize Him, many choose to reject Him outright. So, we ask: Do we really need God? In this article, we will explore and affirm the indubitable truth that man absolutely needs God.

1. God Is Our Creator

The Bible resounds with declarations that God is our Creator. Here are five powerful verses:

  • “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

  • “Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” (Psalm 100:3)

  • “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” (Job 33:4)

  • “Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?” (Malachi 2:10)

  • “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.” (Revelation 4:11)

God has existed and will continue to exist without man, but man cannot exist apart from the source of life—God! We are not self-made beings; we owe our very being to the hand of God.

2. God Is the Only Source of Life

Not only did God create life, but He is the very fountain of it. Without Him, there would be no life at all.

  • “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'” (John 14:6)

  • “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:4)

  • “The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up.” (1 Samuel 2:6)

  • “See now that I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive.” (Deuteronomy 32:39)

Jesus also warned:

  • “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)

Without God, life ceases to exist—He alone holds the keys of life and death.

3. God Sustains Us

It is not only that God created us and is the source of life—He actively sustains us every moment. Paul said in Acts 17:28:

  • “For in Him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28)

Other related verses include:

  • “He gives to all life, breath, and all things.” (Acts 17:25)

  • “You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” (Psalm 145:16)

  • “He upholds all things by the word of His power.” (Hebrews 1:3)

Our health, our resources, our strength, our talents, our opportunities, our wisdom, our protection, and even the very air we breathe—all come from God. Without His continuous provision, we would instantly vanish.

4. God Gives True Meaning and Purpose to Life

Life without God is ultimately empty and void. But Jesus came to give us a life full of meaning, hope, and eternal joy:

  • “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

  • “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

  • “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Without God, life is a chasing after the wind. With God, life has an eternal, glorious purpose.

5. God Is Salvation

Our greatest need is not just physical or emotional—it is spiritual. We are sinners in need of a Savior. And God alone, through Jesus Christ, has provided the only way to salvation.

  • “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

  • “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

Only Jesus—the fully God and fully human Savior—has the power to take away our sins and reconcile us to God. (Learn more about this profound truth in our article “What Does it Mean That Jesus is the Lamb of God?”.)

Final Thought

To deny our need for God is to deny our very existence.

Many today boldly and arrogantly claim, “I never asked God to create me,” and live in utter disregard for His authority, His love, and His grace. But whether we acknowledge Him or not, the truth remains: we were created by God, we are sustained by God, and without Him, we have no life at all.

God, in His immeasurable love, has given us free will. Those who choose to return to Him, to acknowledge Him as their God, and to place their faith in Him through the Lord Jesus Christ will receive eternal life. But those who persist in rejecting Him will face the tragic and terrifying consequence of being thrown into the lake of fire.

You need God. We all need God. The choice is yours. Choose life. Choose God.

That is why we must listen to the preaching of the Lord Jesus Christ: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17) To repent means to make a firm decision to return to God and make things right with God through the Lord Jesus Himself.

Secondly, in everything we do, let us acknowledge Him:

  • “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

And lastly, let us dedicate everything we do to glorifying Him:

  • “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
