How Can I Return to God?

QUESTION:

HOW CAN I RETURN TO GOD?

ANSWER:

The only way to return to God is to make a personal decision to repent and entrust your life to Jesus Christ—God’s only way back home.

This article answers any of the following questions: How can I return to God? How do I come back to God? Is it too late to return to God? Can I still come back to God? How can I get saved? How can I go to heaven? What should I do to come back to God? how can I be close to God again? Is God still waiting for me? I need God in my life, where to start? I want to surrender my life to Jesus, how to do it?

Let us begin.

The Only Way Back

Every one of us, at some point, has wandered far from God—whether knowingly or unknowingly. But the good news is this: God has made a way for us to return. That way is not through religion, good deeds, or rituals, but through a Person—our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”John 14:6

He is not one of many ways. He is the only way. If you are searching for a way to come back to God, know this: there is a Savior who gave His life to bring you home.

1. Why Do We Need a Savior?

Our need to return to God began when humanity chose to turn away from Him. Sin entered the world, and with it came separation from God, spiritual death, and all the pain and brokenness we see today.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”Romans 3:23
“For the wages of sin is death…”Romans 6:23

But God, in His love, sent His Son. Jesus Christ came to redeem us from the curse of sin. He lived a perfect, sinless life, and then took our punishment upon Himself by dying on the cross. (See also: “Why Was Jesus Born?”)

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:8

Through His death, the penalty of sin has been paid. And through His resurrection, the power of death has been broken. Forgiveness is now available to all who will come to Him.

2. God’s Invitation and Command to Return

God is not waiting to punish you—He is waiting to receive you. His invitation is open to all who will listen.

“ ‘Come now, and let us reason together,’ says the Lord, ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.’ Isaiah 1:8

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” — Revelation 3:20

But this invitation comes with a call: Repent. To repent means to make a decision to return to God—to stop living a life ignoring Him and to start walking back to Him with a sincere heart.

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out…”Acts 3:19

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” — Acts 17:30-31

God’s arms are open waiting for you to come, but you must decide to come back to Him.

3. Your Response: Will You Return Today?

God has done His part. Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of your sins and He rose again from the dead after He has conquered death because He is the Messiah and the Son of the Living God. The question now is:

  • Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of your sins?

  • Do you believe that Jesus rose from the dead, proving that He is the Son of God and the promised Messiah?

  • Are you ready to be reconciled with God today, to stop running and finally return to Him through Jesus Christ?

If your answer is yes, then you are ready to return to God. You are ready to entrust your life to Jesus.

A Simple Prayer of Acceptance

This is a guide prayer that you can pray with faith and a sincere expression of your heart to God. If you want to return to God and mean every word, say this to Him now:

Lord God, I know I have sinned and walked far from You. But today, I believe that Jesus is the only way to come back to You. I believe He died on the cross for my sins and rose again to give me life. I now make the decision to return to You. I entrust my life to Jesus. Please forgive me, cleanse me, and take over my life. Lord Jesus, from this day onward, I accept and receive you in my heart as my Lord and Savior, Amen.

Welcome to New Life With Jesus!

If you just prayed that prayer with faith, congratulations! You have just been reconciled with God and are now a child of God, forgiven, redeemed, and born again. You have crossed from death to life, from darkness to light, and from guilt to grace.

The journey of following Jesus begins today. Seek Him through His Word, connect with other believers, and grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
